MydearMissBetham,—Mybrotherandmyselfreturnyouathousandthanksforyourkindmunication.Wehavereadyourpoemmanytimesoverwithincreasedinterest,andverymuchwishtoseeyoutotellyouhowhighlywehavebeenpleasedwithit.Maywebegonefavour?—Ikeepthemanuscriptinthehopethatyouwillgrantit.Itisthat,eithernoworwhenthewholepoemispleted,youwillreaditoverwithus.WhenIsaywithus,ofcourseImeanCharles.Iknowthatyouhavemanyjudiciousfriends,butIhavesooftenknownmybrotherspyouterrorsinamanuscriptwhichhaspassedthroughmanyjudicioushands,thatIshallnotbeeasyifyoudonotpermithimtolookyourscarefullythroughwithyou;andalsoyoumustallowhimtocorrectthepressforyou.

IfIknewwheretofindyouIwouldcalluponyou.ShouldyoufeelnervousattheideaofmeetingCharlesinthecapacityofaseverecensor,givemealine,andIwilletoyouanywhere,andconvinceyouinfiveminutesthatheiseventimid,stammers,andcanscarcelyspeakformodestyandfearofgivingpainwhenhefindshimselfplacedinthatkindofoffice.ShallIappointatimetoseeyouherewhenheisfromhome?Iwillsendhimoutanytimeyouwillname;indeed,Iamalwaysnaturallyalonetillfouroclock.Ifyouarenervousabouting,rememberIamequallysoaboutthelibertyIhavetaken,andshallbetillwemeetandlaughoffourmutualfears.
